Biography
Visual artist Meri Peura was born in 1981 in Tampere, Finland. Peura lives and works in Hallakorpi, Janakkala. Peura graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2011. From the very beginning, a central focus of Peura’s artistic practice has been the need to address questions that define humanity: how human actions affect other living activity on the planet, and how far we are willing to go in our efforts to maximize our own well-being. Through her works, Peura has taken a stand on shortcomings in our society, such as consumerist hysteria, questionable power structures, and actions that contribute to biodiversity loss. In addition to her personal artistic practice, she has collaborated in interdisciplinary projects with musicians, sound designers, and set designers. Works created through these collaborations have been exhibited, among other places, at the art museums of Hämeenlinna and Hyvinkää, as well as at the Musica Nova and Earth Songs festivals. Peura sees art as an effective means of influence because it often creates a bridge to emotions, through which we can reach a deeper level of understanding of issues, phenomena, and ourselves.
